First Premier Weekend

The first round of the national Premier Division was held in Milton Keynes this weekend with Essex rejoining the highest level after being promoted from Division 1 at the first attempt. With a strong looking Surrey side awaiting us on Sunday a good start against Avon and Hertfordshire was very important.

The team kicked off against Avon with three out of the four singles rubbers including tough wins for local players Tanapat Pisitpong and Caroline Westley. However it was nearly all downhill from there as we managed just the one win in the doubles, also coming from Caz and Ging together in the top Ladies Doubles.

The afternoon fixture against Herts started in similar fashion with wins for our girls again in the singles and Eddie Chow. The guys were able to follow suit this time and took both the Men's Doubles helping to set up a 7-3 win. As the competition is eventually decided on the number of rubbers won it is essential to secure decisive wins when possible.

Sunday's tie with Surrey was every bit as tough as expected, made even more difficult because Joel Gayle and Atu Sagita were unavailable. Caroline Westley secured the only point although Tanapat came very close against Georgina Bland.
